If you have a child ready to start kindergarten in the fall and he/she has
not previously been in one of our preschool programs, please contact

get him/her set up for registration and screenings.
PreK Information for the Upcoming School Year
RSU #74 Preschool is run by the school district and no longer in conjunction with KVCAP Head Start. We will continue to partner with Child Development Services to provide services to students with special needs.

Eligible Students
Open to all students living in RSU #74 (regardless of income) who will turn four years old before
October 15, 2025
Due to state law governing public preschool programs, we can take 16 students at Garret Schenck Elementary School and 14 students at Solon Elementary School. Once we fill all the slots, we will put other students on a wait list in case openings occur during the year.
Hours
Program will run five full days a week 7:50-2:20 and follow the same schedule for holidays and vacations as the K-12 program
Meals
Free Breakfast and Lunch will be provided
Transportation
A student younger than four years old can't ride a bus until he or she turns four.
All four-year-old students must wear seat belts on the bus. A parent or family member must buckle the student and unbuckle the student at home; school staff will buckle and unbuckle the student at the schools. If the student needs to transfer to a different bus to ride to the
child's school, those transfers will take place at Carrabec High School with a staff member making sure children get on the right transfer bus. Parents are also welcome to transport their child to preschool.
Our Screening will be held on April 29th from 8:00 – 3:00

The school community of RSU #74 will work together to raise the aspirations of all students by providing them with lifelong learning skills so that they may become self-sufficient contributing members of society.
For new families that wish to enroll their students in our schools you can do so using our Student Registration Portal. Just create a new account and follow the instructions. Once completed, your child's school paperwork will be in the system for our office staff.

May Staff Spotlight
Ms. Melody Rich
Third grade is an important stepping stone year in the academic life of students. When they leave second grade and enter third, students need to become more independent learners. To lead them on a successful learning journey, third graders at Solon Elementary School are very fortunate to have the perfect teacher for the job, this month’s Staff Spotlight, Ms. Melody Rich.
Ms. Rich first came to Solon Elementary School as a preschool assistant teacher working for KVCAP’s Head Start program. She returned to Solon in the fall of 2019 to become the third grade teacher there. With a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology from the University of Maine at Farmington, a Master’s Degree in elementary education from the University of Phoenix and teaching experience at Head Start and the Cornville Charter School, Ms. Rich had the background and skills needed to be an instant success in her new position.
Ms. Rich’s classroom is organized, warm and inviting, and students are surrounded with reminders about the importance of displaying a growth mindset, showing kindness to all, and being the best that you can be. In her daily Morning Meeting, Ms. Rich gives each student a chance to share and listen to others, which builds a strong and positive classroom culture. She has strong classroom management skills, and her classroom is a calm and supportive environment in which students of all ability levels and needs can learn and thrive. To mold her students into independent learners, she uses a workshop model in which students take responsibility for completing the tasks at hand and learn to manage their time wisely. She collaborates with the school’s Special Education and intervention staff members to plan, deliver, and assess the progress of students who receive services through those programs.
Ms. Rich is a very popular teacher with both students and parents. They can trust that she will connect with each student to help each one to grow and blossom, and she will communicate with the families who are so important in that process.
Possessing strong leadership skills, Ms. Rich is considered a leader in her school and our district. She serves as the lead teacher as well as the 5-2-1-0 School Champion, New Teacher Mentor, and member of the leadership team at Solon Elementary School. Student wellness is her passion, and she plans a multitude of classroom and school activities that provide students with opportunities to learn about and practice healthy habits. She organizes the school’s monthly Walking School Bus activities. This year she worked with our physical education teacher Ms. Shelby Obert to plan a “March Madness” basketball activity in which all PreK-5 students participated and got lots of exercise while also having lots of fun. Ms. Rich also is instrumental in planning the school’s annual Field Day every June. She recently presented the Grades 3-5 portion of our new reading program to the School Board, and she has presented other workshops for district staff.
Ms. Rich’s strong technology skills enable her to make great use of technology in her classroom from posting agendas and learning goals for each lesson on her Promethean board to assigning students learning activities and learning games on their computers. When the pandemic started, Ms. Rich trained other district teachers in how to use the digital platforms Seesaw and Google Classroom so that they could connect with and assign work to their students. Remote students joined Ms. Rich’s in-person classes with success.
RSU #74 and Solon Elementary School are blessed to have such a strong teacher leader as Ms. Melody Rich on staff. We thank her and hope she stays in our district for many years to come!
